Communities & Housing
Communities & Housing covers a wide range of environmental and regulatory based services and in terms of staff is our largest Directorate, with 1000 people working on Housing, Highways & Transport, Waste, Environmental and Regulatory Services, Streetsmart, Planning, Property Maintenance, Design & Architecture and Heritage and culture.
We are one of the leading local authority housing organisations in the region. Leading on ambition with an ambitious development £50 million programme over the next 3 years; leading on innovation with new approaches to solving homelessness and new dynamic approaches to managing compliance; and leading on investment with £75 million identified to invest in our housing stock over the next 5 years.
Our corporate priorities and pledges to achieve our vision focus heavily on the work undertaken by Communities & Housing.
We have wide ranging plans for developing the town centre, major upgrades to our road network, developing employment, leisure and retail opportunities in the town and facilitating over 20,000 new homes by 2026. We are working with a major leisure provider to develop a Snowdome facility in Swindon, which now has planning permission. We are also facilitating an exciting redevelopment scheme at Kimmerfields in the Town Centre, which will bring additional jobs, homes and retail into a prime site close to the railway station. In addition, we have major town expansions schemes well advanced at Wichelstowe, Tadpole Garden Village and Badbury Park, and in the New Eastern Villages we are bringing forward the largest greenfield urban extension in England.
The Heritage Team are responsible for operating our nationally recognised STEAM museum, as well as the park, house, museum, hotel and conference centre at Lydiard, and the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Exciting plans are afoot for each of these facilities as we maximise exposure to the best of our heritage whilst providing high quality facilities for conferencing and events.
Communities and Housing includes a number of regulatory functions such as Licensing, Building Control, Animal Health and Planning. Where we can, we are keen to use these functions proactively to bring about improvements to the quality of the environment, public safety, health and wellbeing.
We recognise that to rise to this challenge we need employees with the potential to develop these programmes and in return we will invest in your personal development.
