Michael Sloan - Repairs Supervisor

Tell us about yourself Michael Sloan

I am 35 years old and joined Swindon Borough Council 6 months ago.  Previous to joining Swindon Borough Council, I had 19 years working for Asda and Sainsbury’s in various management positions, working in London and in the South West. I have lived in Swindon the majority of my life and went to Cardiff University. I have a six year old daughter and a 3 year old Son. I am TEETOTAL and have never ever tried alcohol not even in a Trifle! I would love to be Chief Executive of Swindon Borough Council.

What attracted you to join SBC?

I have always been interested in housing on reflection I should have studied Housing at University. As Aldi and Lidl have sprung up around the country I was offered redundancy. I joined SBC as I feel I can really make a difference in my community with diversity of work. I was impressed with the professionalism of the interview I got a real sense that I would be welcomed.

What do you most enjoy about working here?

I enjoy managing a team of operatives who are passionate about their jobs. I also enjoy the interaction with members of the public. I am the face of Swindon Council when I am on my travels in the housing estates.

Describe a typical day in your role

How long have you got…..

Typically I get calls from my operatives before I leave home. We have to respond to weather and daily issues such as vehicle breakdowns. I am normally the first person in the office making sure the operatives have a point of contact before starting any jobs. I may have tool and plant inspections booked in all before 8am! I will answer my emails before leaving to visit tenants, meet contractors or complete visits to my team. No two days are the same, it’s very fast pace.  I use my own vehicle and can complete a few hundred miles a month travelling in the Borough.

What motivates you at work?

I am motivated by my own personal development and working with great people. I feel really engaged with the constant communication by email and from my line manager Pete Collins.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I am a massive VW and Volvo enthusiast, I have 18 cars in my 20 year collection. Those of you who watch Dr. Who will see my vehicle featured in the recent series. In my spare time I like to see my family as much as possible. Sadly, my brother died at 32 years old and it really put life into perspective – we are only here once.

Where is the best place you have visited?

I do not have a passport everything I need is in Swindon!

Who are your dream dinner guests?

My brother – I would give anything to have him back.

Peter Jones – I have seen him drive products and services into Sainsbury’s and change peoples lives.

What is your favourite film or book and why?

My favourite book is Here is New York: A democracy of Photographs by Scalo

911 changed the world forever and this book also brings a tear to my eye. We weren’t allowed to watch the footage on the day it happened at Sixth Form due to A Level syllabus constraints.

What are your ambitions/aspirations?

My ambition is to have a long lasting career in Swindon Borough Council.

I have aspirations to be Chief Executive of Swindon Borough Council.
