The Environmental Health Team at Swindon Borough Council has undergone a redesign.

A specialist Housing Team has been created within the Environmental Health service to allow officers to focus on this technical area of Environmental Health.

We deliver Environmental Health alongside our Public Health partners which enables greater opportunities and outcomes and are looking to recruit a qualified Environmental Health Officer within the Environmental Health Housing Team.

At Swindon we pride ourselves on developing staff to their highest potential and as an Environmental Health Officer within the team, you will be part of this same investment.

Your next role

You will be part of a successful team focussing on Housing standards within the private sector. The team is proactive with ensuring compliance in the private rented sector but we also focus on engagement with landlords and partners to improve standards for tenants and owner occupiers.

You will carry a varied and engaging caseload that spreads across all areas of the Private Housing Sector.  You will support the team with introducing new and exciting enforcement powers under the Renters Rights Act alongside existing legislation and duties. You will engage and educate landlords and tenants to improve housing standards, and you will manage your own caseload and lead on prosecutions, warrants of entry and works in default.  You will also contribute towards delivering Disabled Facilities Grants and work alongside our partner services to support vulnerable clients.

As an Environmental Health Officer you will have opportunities to provide training and leadership to other staff members and will work with technical officers to enable the best outcomes for Swindon residents.

Hybrid working is encouraged, and you will be working flexibly on the district completing visits, at home as well as in the office. This produces the best outcomes as part of a holistic and multi-disciplinary team providing advice, enablement, and enforcement as part of a wider public health delivery agenda.

Your background

It is essential that you have a degree in Environmental Health, & EHORB registration or equivalent, and you will be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of housing standards. Experience in prosecutions and imposing civil penalties is beneficial.

You will possess excellent people skills allied with the proven ability to listen, explain, negotiate and influence.  You will have a track record of good performance in a busy environment and demonstrate leadership skills.

The ability to travel throughout the Borough will be required.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act – for the effective performance of a customer-facing role).

Your next package

Please see our Rewards and Benefits offer for more details.

As an employee, you will receive a diverse and exciting environment in which to work, encouraging creativity and innovation whilst recognising the need to support ongoing personal development and a flexible work life balance.

For Swindon to thrive in the future, we need to lay the foundations now. It’s why our regeneration and transformation programmes are already underway. So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions and drive real, positive change. With your contributions, we’ll achieve our vision of a prosperous, re-vitalised Swindon together. And you’ll be proud to say it was made better with you.

Please see our Vision and Values page for more details.
