Swindon Museums is looking for a confident and motivated Visitor Experience Officer to join our successful museum team and play a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway, Lydiard House Museum and Museum & Art Swindon.

Your next role

No two days are the same in this multi-layered and multi-faceted role As a Visitor Experience Officer, you will act as a Duty Officer.

You will:

  • Ensure the safety and security of visitors, staff, and collections including managing building opening/closing procedures.
  • Support and supervise front-of-house teams, including visitor experience assistants, volunteers, and cleaners.
  • Respond to and manage incidents, emergencies, and operational issues effectively.
  • Oversee event set-up, support group visits, and ensure smooth delivery of daily programmes.
  • Carry out health & safety, compliance, and maintenance checks, escalating issues where needed.

About You:

  • Experience in a supervisory or duty management role, ideally in a visitor-facing or museum venue.
  • Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Confident managing a team and working independently.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Calm under pressure and responsive to operational challenges.
  • Flexible with working hours – including weekends and evenings on a rota basis.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).
