The Public Health Team at Swindon Borough Council is seeking to recruit two experienced and motivated Public Health Principals to provide expertise, innovation and public health leadership across Swindon.

Our vision is to tackle inequalities and empower all people in Swindon to live longer, healthier, fulfilling lives, supported by thriving and connected communities. Our highly successful public health team works to improve and protect the health of Swindon residents, tackle health inequalities and protect the most vulnerable.

Both roles will be expected to work across the domains of public health, and be prepared to step up to tackle emerging issues and opportunities. In the first instance the successful post holders will lead on the following portfolio areas:

  • Health Protection and Sexual Health
  • Health improvement and Health Inequalities

Main duties of the job

The Public Health team are expected to deliver across the four domains of public health:

  • Health intelligence, using data and evidence to inform all we do;
  • Health Protection – identifying, preventing and mitigating the impacts of infectious diseases and of environmental, chemical and radiological threats;
  • Health Improvement –helping people to improve and maintain their health by developing, implementing and evaluating strategies and interventions;
  • Healthcare public health services –using evidence to support service development and to ensure the quality of services by assisting in the commissioning of services.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the strategic direction across areas of designated responsibility and will provide an advanced specialist public health approach with minimal supervision to reflect both national and local priorities with the emphasis on prevention and reducing health inequalities.

This role is a hybrid role, you must have the ability to attend Civic Offices and travel throughout the Borough will be required.

These roles are full time, but flexible hours will be considered for the right candidates.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).
