At Swindon Borough Council, we want our town to be the best it can be. Our ambitious vision is supported by realistic transformation programmes, with the people of Swindon at their heart. Because that’s who we’re doing it for – the communities and businesses that make our town great. As part of the Council, you’ll support a friendly local authority making decisions with real impact. It’s all for better public services. Better processes. And a better quality of life, for everyone. Join us, and Swindon will be better with you.

We deliver Environmental Health within and alongside Public Health colleagues enabling greater opportunities and better outcomes.  We are looking to recruit a Senior Environmental Health Officer with specialist private sector housing experience and knowledge.

At Swindon we pride ourselves on developing staff to their highest potential, and as a Senior member of the team, you will play a vital role in developing all our colleagues.

Your next role

You will be part of a successful and supportive multi-disciplinary team, operating across the Housing and Environmental Protection arena.  You will carry a varied and engaging case-load at all levels of intervention.  As a senior officer you will lead on Housing topics, and contribute to oversight for prosecutions, warrants of entry, seizures and works in default.

You will have opportunities to deputise for the team leader, help lead the team, and provide mentoring, support and training to your colleagues.

We have embedded hybrid working and you will be working flexibly, completing visits, at home and in the office. We provide advice, enablement, and enforcement as part of the wider public health delivery agenda.  We are a busy team and you will experience all that the topics have to offer

It is essential that you have a degree in Environmental Health, & EHORB registration or equivalent, and you will be able to demonstrate a broad technical background across a range of relevant Environmental Health disciplines, with an emphasis on housing. You should have a track record of achieving compliance at the lowest practicable level of intervention, but also have experience in the Civil and Criminal disposal of offences.  Previous experience as a Senior EHO is beneficial.

You will possess excellent people skills allied with the proven ability to listen, explain, negotiate and influence.  You will have a track record of good performance in a busy environment and demonstrate leadership skills.

You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).

The ability to travel throughout the Borough will be required

So, you’ll be joining us at an exciting time on our journey. We’ll look to you to share your knowledge, influence decisions and drive real, positive change.
